Colors and the Meaning of the Bangladesh Flag

The national flag of Bangladesh was adopted on 17 January 1972. It is quite similar to the flag used in the Freedom War of Bangladesh in 1971. In the first designed state, a map of the country in the red sun is depicted, but this image has been removed.

The only difference of the flag, which is very similar to the current Japan Flag, is that the color of the ground is green. The rounded shape on the flag symbolizes the sun rising in the territory of Bangladesh, and the red color of the sun symbolizes the blood of the people who give their lives for the independence of Bangladesh. Flags used in naval ships and government vehicles change the ground to red or white.

History of the Bangladesh Flag

The national flag of Bangladesh adopted on 17 January 1972 is rectangular. The color of the flag is dark green. There is a red circle inside. The radius of this circle is one-fifth of the length of the flag and closer to the top of the flag.

The establishment of the independent Pakistani State, which was left in India, was announced in 1947, and Mohammad Ali Jinnah, the founder of the Pakistani state, supported the Pakistani leadership of East Pakistan, known as Bangladesh. The goal of the Awami party, led by Mujibur Rahman, supported by the majority of Bengali, is to gain autonomy from the Eastern Pak, where Bangladesh was founded.

On December 16, 1971, the Pakistan War of Independence, which was held between the Liberation forces and the Indian army for 9 months in all corners of Pakistan under the leadership of Mujibur Rahman, was won with a crushing victory. After this war, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman officially declared the independence of Bangladesh.

The Independence of Bangladesh

On March 3, 1971, there was a historic day at the University of Dhaka in the capital and the flag of Bengals was raised for the first time. Mujibur Rahman made a historical speech and declared resistance for independence.

The flag has the same design as the flag used in the Independence War of Bangladesh in 1971. The Bengal flag is similar to the Japanese flag except for the ground color. The flag of the Bengal flag is green. This color is often seen on the flags of Islamic countries and symbolizes the religion of Islam. But the green color of the Bangladesh flag shows the fertile nature and youth of Bangladesh.

In September 1974, the flag of Bangladesh was first seen at the United Nations. China vetoed, however, to oppose Bangladesh’s accession to the United Nations.

In 1906, the national anthem of Bangladesh named My Golden Country was written and composed by the poet Rabindranath Tagore. The first 10 verses of this poem were officially recognized as the national anthem in 1972. The flag of Bangladesh is currently fluctuating in 64 Bengali provinces.
