Adamawa

It is a West African country that is called ‘Little Africa’. A large part of the population lives in rural areas. There are 286 ethnic groups in the country. There are two official languages, English and French. Apart from official languages, local African languages are also spoken.

The neighboring countries of Cameroon are:

  • Nigeria in the north,
  • Chad in the northeast,
  • the Central African Republic in the east, and
  • Congo, Gabon and Equator Guinea in the south.
  • On the south-western side is the Gulf of Guinea.

Geography

There are hot, rainy plains covered with marsh plants called mangroves and reeds that continue along the coast of the Atlantic Ocean. The plateaus, which are torn by the river beds along the south and east and whose height is 1,000 meters to the north, are the main ground forms of this region. There are also volcanoes here.

Governance

The federal republic is governed by the President and the 120-member parliament. Half of the members of the Bundestag are elected directly by the people and half by the assemblies of the federal states. The president is also prime minister at the same time.

Climate

Equatorial climate prevails throughout the country. However, there are differences according to regions. The climate is dry in the north. Although there is plenty of rainfall in Central Cameroon, there are dry seasons that last for 5-7 months. The southern part is one of the world’s most rainy regions.

Religion

40% of the people depend on Animism, which is the religion of the African tribe.

35% of the population is Christian. Although Muslims constitute one-fifth of the total population, Islam is rapidly becoming widespread and dynamic.

Industry and Tourism

The country’s industry has developed in recent years. There is an aluminum factory where the extracted bauxite is processed. Beside this, there are cement, sugar, soap, shoes, foodstuffs and cigarette factories. The oil that has been found in recent years has caused the economy to accelerate.

Fishing on the Atlantic Ocean and inland waters catches 70,000 tons of fish on average. Cocoa comes first among the most important products in the country. Besides this, coffee, cotton, bananas, rice, rubber are important products. Also, sesame, tea, spices, sugar cane, corn, and potatoes have importance.

In the country known for its natural wonders, there are many national parks listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List and nominated for this list. These national parks are also tourist attractions to visit during holidays in the country.

Art

Among Cameroon’s most important works of art are masks, animal figures, drums and thrones made in different shapes from wood.
