History of the Greece Flag

The first inhabitants of Greece were called Pelasgi, the people of the sea. However, one day these inhabitants of the peninsula fled south with the influence of invaders who migrated from the north. One after another, they spread to the southern shores of the Aegean Islands.

The origin of the Greek flag is still a matter of debate, but it was officially adopted by Greece on 22 December 1978. Before this date, many flags, slogans, and emblems were used by many people in the early years of the Ottoman occupation and Greek War. However, in order to collect the nation under one central government, the Greeks chose the version of the flag we know today, one year after declaring its independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1821.
