Colors and the Meaning of the Liechtenstein Flag
The Liechtenstein Flag has two evenly extending horizontal stripes on the ground, blue (top) and red. There is a golden yellow crown on top of the blue ribbon.
The colors and symbols of the flags have cultural, political and regional meanings. While the blue color represents the sky, the red color is pointing to the fires of the evening burning in the houses across the country. The crown represents the unity of the people and their prince. The color of the crown is controversial. In some sources, the color of the crown is yellow, while in some sources the color is golden.

History of the Liechtenstein Flag
Liechtenstein was founded in 1719 as a principality within the Holy Roman Empire and gained full independence in 1866. In this period, the blue and red flag was chosen instead of red and white colors of the coat of arm. These new colors were first used by Prince Joseph Wenzel I in 1764.
A new constitution for the Principality was prepared and announced in October 1921. With this constitution made the national flag of Liechtenstein giving the official status to the blue and red flag. Fifteen years later, during the 1936 Summer Olympics, the country realized that the flag of Haiti was the same as the Haitian flag, even though Haiti did not participate in the Olympics that year. Because of this situation, the government added the crown of the prince to the flag. This change had two aims. To symbolize Liechtenstein’s position as a principality and to separate his flag from Haiti. This modified design was adopted on 24 June 1937.
