Oman Flag Map and Meaning

Colors and the Meaning of the Oman Flag

The Oman flag is composed of three equal stripes horizontally and a vertical strip on the left side. Horizontal stripes are white, red and green in color from top to bottom and red in vertical. On the vertical stripe is the national coat of arms of the country in the upper left corner, consisting of two cross-layered swords, Khanjar’s dagger, and a belt.

The red base is derived from the old flag of Oman and symbolizes the struggle of Al Bu Said, the ruler of Oman and the country’s struggle for independence since the middle of the 18th century. The white color represents the imam, the country’s religious leader, and also means peace and prosperity. The green color is the color of Islam and it represents the efficiency of the country with its example of Al Jabal al Akhdar (Green Mountains) in the north-east.

History of the Oman Flag

By 1975, Oman used the plain red flag of the indigenous people. In 1970, the Sultan introduced a completely new set of national flags. The green and white bands were placed on the right side of the flag and the national emblem of the Albusaidi Dynasty on the left side. White has been historically associated with Imam, the religious leader of Oman and the Sultan in power. Red is a common color in the Gulf State flags. It is said that the national emblem dates back to the 18th century.

The flag of Oman was adopted on 18 November 1995, after the changes were made in 1970. As a result of the coup in 1970 by the son of the Sultan, there was a change in the name of Muscat and Sultanate of Oman. Thus, the red flag was added to the country coat of arms with green and white strips. The ratio of the Oman flag was changed from 2: 3 to 1: 2, and the flag did not change much, in general, except that the width of the horizontal strips was equalized.
