Provinces of Sierra Leone

The African country of Sierra Leone is divided into five as the top administrative structure. These provinces are divided into 16 districts. 16 districts are divided into 190 chiefdoms.

Five Provinces of Sierra Leone

Sierra Leone is divided into five units as the highest level administrative division. These provinces are Eastern Province, Northern Province, Southern Province, North West Province and Western Area.

Eastern Province

The Eastern Province is one of the five existing provinces of Sierre Leone. Its capital and administrative center is Kenema. The province has an area of 15,553 square kilometers and has a population of 1,641,012 according to the 2015 census. The Eastern Province is divided into three districts.

Northern Province

Northern Province is one of the five existing provinces of Sierre Leone. Located in the northern part of Sierra Leone. Makeni is the administrative and economic center of the region. The Northern Province Region covers an area of 35,936 square kilometers with a population of 2,502,865 based on the 2015 Sierra Leone national census. The Northern Province is divided into five districts. These districts are Bombali District, Kambia District, Koinadugu District, Port Loko District and Tonkolili District.

Southern Province

Southern Province is one of the five existing provinces of Sierre Leone. It is located in the south. Bo is the administrative and economic center of the region. The Southern Province District covers an area of 19,694 square kilometers with a population of 1,438,572 based on the 2015 Sierra Leone national census. Southern Province is divided into four districts. These districts are Bo District, Bonthe District, Moyamba District and Pujehun District.

North West Province

The North West Province is one of the five existing provinces of Sierre Leone. Located in the North West of Sierra Leone. The administrative and economic center of the region is Port Loko. The North West Province Region has a population of 1,162,065 based on the 2015 Sierra Leone national census. Southern Province is divided into three districts. These districts are Kambia District, Karine Kambia District and Port Loko Kambia District.

Western Area

The Western Area, also known as the Freetown Peninsula, covers the old city, the national capital Freetown, the surrounding towns and the countryside. Based on the 2015 Sierra Leone national census, it has a population of 1,447,271 and covers an area of 557 square kilometers. The Western Area is mostly located around the peninsula and is divided into two regions: Western Area Rural and Western Area Urban. The Western Area is the richest region in Sierra Leone, the country’s largest economy, the country’s financial and cultural center, and the richest region with the country’s national government.
