Regions of Mauritania

The African country of Mauritania is divided into 15 regions, 12 of which are the top administrative structures, and 3 are the capital regions. These 15 regions are subdivided into 44 departments.

The capital region is divided into three sections:

  • Nouakchott-Nord,
  • Nouakchott-Ouest and
  • Nouakchott-Sud.

Thirteen Regions of Mauritania

The African country of Mauritania is divided into 15 regions, the highest administrative division. Regions of Mauritania are Adrar, Assaba, Brakna, Dakhlet Nouadhibou, Gorgol, Guidimaka, Hodh Ech Chargui, Hodh El Gharbi, Inchiri, Nouakchott-Nord, Nouakchott-Ouest, Nouakchott-Sud, Tagant, Tiris Zemmour and Trarza.

Adrar

Adrar is one of the 15 regions of Mauritania. The region is located in the central and eastern part of the country. The area is 235,000 square kilometers and the population is 62,658 according to the 2013 census. The capital of the region is Atar. The region is bounded by Tiris Zemmour region in the north and Western Sahara, Dakhlet Nouadhibou and Inchiri regions in the west, Hodh Ech Chargui region and Mali country in the east and Trarza and Tagant regions in the south.

Assaba

Assaba is one of the 15 regions of Mauritania. The region is located in the southern part of the country. The area of the region is 36,600 square kilometers and its population is 325,897 according to the 2013 census. The capital of the region is the city of Kiffa. The region forms a border with Tagant region in the north, Brakna, Gorgol and Guidimaka regions in the west, Hodh El Gharbi region in the east and Mali country in the south.

Brakna

Brakna is one of the 15 regions of Mauritania. The region is located in the southwestern part of the country. The area is 33,000 square kilometers and the population is 312,277 according to the 2013 census. The capital of the region is Aleg. The region forms a border with the Adrar region from the north, the Trarza region from the west, the Tagant, Assaba regions from the east, the Guidimaka region from the south and the country of Senegal.

Dakhlet Nouadhibou

Dakhlet Nouadhibou is one of the 15 districts of Mauritania. The region is located in the western part of the country. The area of the region is 23,090 square kilometers and the population is 123,779 according to the 2013 census. The capital of the region is Nouadhibou. The region forms a border with the Western Sahara from the north, the North Atlantic Ocean from the west, Adrar from the east, and Tiris Zemmour from the south.

Gorgol

Gorgol is one of 15 regions of Mauritania. The region is located in the southern part of the country. The area of the region is 13,600 square kilometers and the population is 335,917 according to the 2013 census. The capital of the region is Kaedi. The region forms a border with Brakna and Assaba region from the north, Senegal country from the west and Guidimaka region from the east.

Guidimaka

Guidimaka is one of the 15 regions of Mauritania. The region is located in the southernmost part of the country. The area of the region is 10,300 square kilometers and the population is 267,029 according to the 2013 census. The capital of the region is Sรฉlibaby. The region forms a border with Assaba region from the north, Gorgol region from the west, Mali country from the east and Senegal country from the south.

Hodh Ech Chargui

Hodh Ech Chargui is one of 15 regions of Mauritania. The region is located in the southeastern part of the country. The area is 182,700 square kilometers and the population is 430,668 according to the 2013 census. The capital of the region is Nรฉma. The region forms a border with Adrar region from the north, Tagant and Hodh El Gharbi region from the west, Mali country from the east and south.

Hodh El Gharbi

Hodh El Gharbi is one of the 15 districts of Mauritania. The region is located in the southern part of the country. The area of the region is 53,400 square kilometers and the population is 294,109 according to the 2013 census. The capital of the region is Ayoun el Atrous. The region forms a border with Tagant region from the north, Assaba region from the west, Hodh Ech Chargui region from the east and Mali country from the south.

Inchiri

Inchiri is one of 15 regions of Mauritania. The region is located in the western part of the country. The area of the region is 46,800 square kilometers and the population is 19,639 according to the 2013 census. The capital of the region is Akjoujt. The region is bounded by Dakhlet Nouadhibou region from the north and west, North Atlantic Ocean from the southwest, Adrar region from the east and Trarza region from the south.

Nouakchott-Nord

Nouakchott-Nord is one of the 15 districts of Mauritania. The region is one of the three districts of the capital region Nouakchott. The region is located in the western part of the country. The area of the region is 306 square kilometers and the population is 366,912 according to the 2013 census.

Nouakchott-Ouest

Nouakchott-Ouest is one of the 15 districts of Mauritania. The region is one of the three districts of the capital region Nouakchott. The region is located in the western part of the country. The area is 146 square kilometers and the population is 165,814 according to the 2013 census.

Nouakchott-Sud

Nouakchott-Sud is one of the 15 districts of Mauritania. The region is one of the three districts of the capital region Nouakchott. The region is located in the western part of the country. The area is 252 square kilometers and the population is 425,673 according to the 2013 census.

Tagant

Tagant is one of the 15 regions of Mauritania. The region is located in the central part of the country. The area of the region is 98,340 square kilometers and the population is 80,962 according to the 2013 census. The capital of the region is Tidjikja. The region forms a border with the Adrar region in the north, the Brakna region in the west, the Hodh Ech Chargui region in the east and the Assaba and Hodh El Gharbi regions in the south.

Tiris Zemmour

Tiris Zemmour is one of the 15 regions of Mauritania. The region is located in the northernmost part of the country. The area of the region is 252,900 square kilometers and the population is 53,261 according to the 2013 census. The capital of the region is the city of Zouรฉrat. The region borders the Western Sahara and Algeria from the north, Western Sahara from the west, Mali from the east and Adrar from the south.

Trarza

Trarza is one of the 15 regions of Mauritania. The region is located in the southwestern part of the country. The area is 67,800 square kilometers and the population is 272,773 according to the 2013 census. The capital of the region is the city of Rosso. The region is bounded by the Inchiri region from the north, the capital Nouakchott and the North Atlantic Ocean from the west, the Adrar region from the northeast, the Tagant and Brakna region from the east, and Senegal from the south.
