Regions of Slovakia. Slovakia has been divided into regions, which have been called “kraje” in their own language, which means “territory” many times since 1949. Numbers, boundaries and functions have also changed constantly. There are currently eight regions in Slovakia that correspond to level 3 local government units according to the NUTS geocode standard, which the European Union has identified. Each kraj is made up of smaller units called okresy. In Slovakia there are 79 okresy.

Bratislava

The capital is Bratislava. Its population is 603,699. Also its surface area is 2,052.6. Moreover, It consists of 8 districts. These districts are Malacky, Pezinok, Senec and 5 districts of Bratislava.

Trnava

The capital is Trnava. Its population is 554,172. Furthermore, its surface area is 4,172.2. Trnava region consists of 7 districts. These are Dunajská Streda, Galanta, Hlohovec, Piešťany, Senica, Skalica, Trnava.

Trenčín

The capital is Trenčín. The population is 600,386. Its surface area is 4,501.9. Moreover, the region consists of 9 districts; Bánovce nad Bebravou, Ilava, Myjava, Nové Mesto nad Váhom, Partizánske, Považská Bystrica, Prievidza, Púchov, and Trenčín.



Nitra

The capital is Nitra. Its population is 708,498. The surface area is 6,343.4. Furthermore, the seven districts of the region are; Komárno, Levice, Nitra, Nové Zámky, Šaľa, Topoľčany and Zlaté Moravce.

Žilina

The capital is Žilina. Its population is 694,763. The surface area is 6,808.4. Moreover, it consists of 11 districts including Bytča, Čadca, Dolný Kubín, Kysucké Nové Mesto, Liptovský Mikuláš, Martin, Námestovo, Ružomberok, Turčianske Teplice, Tvrdošín and Žilin.

Banská Bystrica

The capital is Banská Bystrica. Its population is 657,119. The surface area is 9,454.8. Furthermore, the 13 district that the region includes are, Banská Bystrica, Banská Štiavnica, Brezno, Detva, Krupina, Lučenec, Poltár, Revúca, Rimavská Sobota, Veľký Krtíš, Zvolen, Žarnovica, Žiar nad Hronom.

Prešov

The capital is Prešov. Its population is 798,596. The surface area is 8,974.5. It consists of 13 districts including Bardejov, Humenné, Kežmarok, Levoča, Medzilaborce, Poprad, Prešov, Sabinov, Snina, Stará Ľubovňa, Stropkov, Svidník, Vranov nad Topľou.

Košice

The capital is Košice. Its population is 771,947. It has an area of 6.751.9. It consists of a total of 11 districts: Gelnica, Košice I, Košice II, Košice III, Košice IV, Košice-okolie, Michalovce, Rožňava, Sobrance, Spišská Nová Ves and Trebišov.
