History of the South Sudan Flag

Before Independence in 2011 South Sudan was a part of Sudan.

The first flag fluctuating in this land was the Ottoman Empire Flag. The Ottoman state, known as Khedivate of Egypt, covered the current region of Egypt and Sudan. The forested flag used in this period consisted of a white crescent on the red ground and three white stars. It can be said that it was the one-star version of the current Turkish Flag.

Like many African countries, it was under British occupation for some time. However, in 1885, the Mahdists tried to uproot the British administration in South Africa and Sudan by an uprising. The flag of this uprising was a flag of black-red-green horizontal stripes. There was a white crescent facing up in the middle of the flag and a white arrow facing upwards.

During the Anglo-Egypitian control of Sudan, which began in 1899, a certain flag was not accepted. However, during this period, the Union Jack and the Egyptian flag were used. The Egyptian flag in this period had a green background and a white crescent and three white stars in the middle of the flag.

In 1956 Sudan became independent, and the blue-yellow-green horizontal three-color flag was chosen as their flags. In 1970, a new flag was elected to represent Sudan. This flag was made up of three red-white-black horizontal stripes and a green triangle on the left side of the flag.

In 2005, South Sudan declared its independence. When South Sudan became independent, they chose a new flag. This flag consists of black-red-green horizontal stripes. Among these strips are thin white strips. A blue triangle on the left side of the flag and a yellow star in the middle of this triangle.

South Sudan, which gained its independence in 2005, is among the newest countries in the world. For this reason, South Sudan Flag is one of the youngest flags.

Main Characteristics of South Sudan

South Sudan, which declared its independence on July 9, 2011, following a referendum in Sudan in January 2011, is the youngest country in Africa. The referendum in Sudan was held as part of a peace agreement signed in 2005 to end the civil war between the south and the north. The new country includes 10 of the 25 states of Sudan. The controversial border areas between Sudan and South Sudan, including Abyei, must decide whether they will stay in Sudan or in South Sudan by separate referendums.

The oil industry, which is shadowed by decades of civil war, keeps the South Sudan economy alive. More than three-quarters of Sudan’s oil production of 500 barrels per day was made in South Sudan. 98 percent of the South’s government revenue comes from the oil sector. However, the South does not have the infrastructure to process oil or transfer it to international markets. For this reason, the oil is processed in the northern refineries and moved from the northern ports to the international markets.
