When Did Gaborone Become the Capital?

Gaborone

By 1969, the city was known as Gaborone. Mafeking, the capital of the Bechuanaland Protectorate, founded by Britain, had moved here. This city, which is now known as Mafikeng, was a remnant of the ancient times and remained within the borders of the Northwest Region of South Africa Republic. However, when the Protectorate gained its independence, the country’s capital needed a place within the borders of the country. It was decided that the capital was Lobatse in the first proposals, but it was decided that this would not be enough and a new capital was established at a point adjacent to Gaborone, a small colonial city.

The center of the city was built in 3 years. Parliament buildings, government offices, power plants, hospitals, schools, radio stations, district centers, post offices, and about 1000 houses were among the first built structures. On October 30, 1966, the infrastructure facilities were largely completed when Bachuanaland celebrated this national day as the 11th African State, devoted to its independence from Britain. Reverend J. D. Jones became the first mayor of the city and implemented many projects for the city. The old city of Gaborone has become a district of Gaborone today and is briefly referred to as The Village.
